What were the significant changes in Russian architectural style introduced by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

Proposal

Coming from a background of working in the building industry I have had experience of building construction. I found the lecture on change in Russian architecture of real interest because of the sheer size of the projects constructed during the early 1700s. For my research essay I want to look more closely at the architecture of Rastrelli and the Imperial Russian Baroque. These were the buildings that particularly inspired me.


My essay will include the following aspects-

A brief summary of the common aspects of baroque architecture

Important styles in Russian architecture prior to 1700 and in particular the Byzantium influence .

An overview of the important historical events associated with the Russian baroque period – Peter the Great

The early phases of Russian baroque architecture.

A detailed study of the work of Rastrelli and his part in the Imperial Russian Baroque movement. This will include aspects of his background, specific features of his architectural style and his important buildings with particular reference to St Petersburg.

Some mention will be made of other baroque architects working during the same period as Rastrelli in Russia.
